On 4 July 1942, as thousands of Australian men served overseas during World War II, women across Sydney stepped into essential roles that had traditionally been performed by men. These photographs capture Joyce Williams, a street photographer, a woman working as a butcher in Surry Hills, and women repairing typewriters—powerful examples of the changing workforce during wartime.

Their contributions helped sustain daily life, supported the war effort, and challenged long-standing gender roles. Across Australia, women proved they could excel in occupations once considered exclusively male, leaving a lasting impact on the nation's workforce and society.

Crew of TBM Avenger 93: A Story of Courage and Sacrifice

This photograph shows the crew of TBM Avenger 93 from USS Essex (CV-9): Radioman Digby Denzek, Pilot Robert Cosgrove, and Gunner Loyce Deen.

On November 5, 1944, Gunner Loyce Deen was killed in action. In accordance with wartime circumstances, he was laid to rest at sea inside his aircraft—a solemn tribute to a serviceman who gave his life in the line of duty.

Hell's Angels: The Legendary B-17 That Survived 48 Combat Missions

Hell's Angels was a B-17F Flying Fortress named after the 1930 film about World War I fighter pilots. Assigned to the 358th Bombardment Squadron of the 303rd Bombardment Group, the aircraft was initially commanded by Captain I.E. Baldwin.

Serving with the Eighth Air Force, Hell's Angels flew under several commanders and crews, reaching its 25th combat mission on May 14, 1943. The aircraft is pictured after completing its 31st mission and ultimately went on to fly 48 combat missions before returning to the United States on December 13, 1943. It was later scrapped on August 14, 1945.

USAF Strike Aircraft Prepare for a Vietnam War Mission

October 1972 — A USAF A-7D Corsair II and an F-105G Thunderchief "Wild Weasel" of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing sit on the flight line at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, preparing for a combat mission over Vietnam.

The F-105G Wild Weasel specialized in suppressing enemy air defenses by locating and attacking surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites, while the A-7D Corsair II provided precision strike capabilities against ground targets. Together, they played a vital role during the final stages of the Vietnam War.

This image captures the teamwork, skill, and determination of the aircrews who flew some of the conflict's most dangerous missions.

Gabby Gabreski's P-47 Thunderbolt: The Mission That Ended in Captivity

During World War II, this USAAF Republic P-47D Thunderbolt, flown by legendary fighter ace Francis "Gabby" Gabreski, suffered a propeller strike while strafing a Luftwaffe airfield. The damage forced him down behind enemy lines, where he was captured and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war (POW).

Despite his capture, Gabreski finished World War II as the highest-scoring U.S. Army Air Forces fighter ace in the European Theater. He later returned to combat during the Korean War, becoming one of the few American pilots to achieve ace status in both propeller-driven and jet aircraft.

Gabreski's extraordinary courage and combat legacy remain among the most remarkable in U.S. military aviation history.

The standard crew consisted of three members: the pilot, copilot/gunner, and navigator/bombardier, each responsible for critical aspects of operating one of the U.S. Air Force's first jet-powered strategic bombers. The B-47 played a key role in America's nuclear deterrence strategy throughout the 1950s.

A factory-fresh Dornier Do 335A Pfeil sits on the tarmac, showcasing one of the fastest piston-engine fighters of World War II. The Do 335A-1 could reach a service ceiling of 37,400 feet and was armed with two 15 mm MG cannons mounted above the nose, along with a powerful 30 mm MK 103 cannon firing through the propeller hub. The later A-6 variant had a service ceiling of 33,400 feet.

8 January 1947 — A Curtiss SOC-1 Seagull taxis away from the seaplane tender USS Currituck (AV-7) before departing on a flight supporting Antarctic operations. As the pilot prepares for takeoff, the radioman climbs onto the aircraft's fuselage to remove the hoisting sling used to lower the Seagull into the water. After the mission, the sling would need to be reattached so the aircraft could be lifted back aboard the ship, highlighting the teamwork and precision required for seaplane operations at sea.

Late World War II — A Supermarine Spitfire undergoes repairs at Strauss Airstrip in Australia's Northern Territory. The tropical climate presented unique challenges for RAF and RAAF aircraft, with high humidity causing maintenance issues on some Spitfire variants. Despite these conditions, the Spitfire remained one of the Allies' most effective fighter aircraft in the Pacific Theater.
