HEMA-FREE DOES NOT MEAN ALLERGY-FREE.
Let’s clear up one common misconception in the nail industry. 💅🏻

You may have noticed ingredients such as Hydroxypropyl Methacrylate (HPMA) and wondered:

“Is this HEMA?”

👉🏻 No. HEMA and HPMA are two different ingredients.

HEMA = 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate
HPMA = 2-Hydroxypropyl Methacrylate

The ingredient shown in our photo is HPMA, NOT HEMA.

So when a product is labeled HEMA-FREE, it means HEMA itself is not intentionally included in the product formulation. It does NOT mean that the product is free from all methacrylates, nor does it mean that it is automatically safe for someone who already has an acrylate/methacrylate allergy.

⚠️ IMPORTANT FOR THOSE WITH EXISTING ALLERGIES

If someone has already developed an allergy to HEMA, simply switching to a HEMA-FREE product does not guarantee that they will have no reaction.

Why?

Because HEMA is only one member of the larger acrylate/methacrylate family.

Other methacrylates—including HPMA—can also cause allergic contact dermatitis. Studies have also found cross-reactivity between HEMA and other methacrylates, including HPMA.

This means a person who is already sensitized to HEMA may also react to another related methacrylate.

But this is important:

It does NOT mean every person allergic to HEMA will automatically be allergic to HPMA.

Allergy patterns are individual, and the only reliable way to determine which substances a person reacts to is through appropriate medical evaluation and patch testing by a dermatologist/allergy specialist.

💡 So what does “HEMA-FREE” actually mean?

HEMA-FREE = No HEMA in the formulation.

It does NOT mean:

❌ Acrylate-free
❌ Methacrylate-free
❌ Allergy-proof
❌ Safe for everyone with an existing nail-product allergy
❌ No possibility of allergic reaction

Even products that do not contain HEMA can contain other acrylates or methacrylates, and these can also cause sensitization or allergic contact dermatitis.

💅🏻 THE MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE

For professionals and clients:

HEMA-FREE is an ingredient claim—not a guarantee against allergies.

The safest practice is always to:

✔️ Know your ingredients
✔️ Avoid uncured product contacting the skin
✔️ Cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions
✔️ Use proper professional application techniques
✔️ Never deliberately apply uncured gel to the skin
✔️ If a client has a known acrylate/methacrylate allergy, don’t assume a HEMA-FREE product is automatically suitable—refer them to their dermatologist for proper advice.

Acrylate monomers can cause allergic contact dermatitis, and nail professionals are among those with occupational exposure.
