Lava fountain episode kanalimakūmākolu (53) at Kīlauea started from 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, August 12 and ended at 1:23 a.m. Thursday. The north vent sent lava up to about 500 feet and pushed a plume to 18,000 feet. Roughly 6 million cubic yards of lava spread across almost half of Halemaʻumaʻu crater, and the west vent showed some brief flame activity in the evening.
Then, only a few hours later, the Perseid meteor shower peaked under a new moon. Shooting stars were easy to see in the late night and pre‑dawn hours.
When natural processes line up like that it’s hard not to notice how special this place is.
