There is only 15 sleeps to go now as we are hurtling towards Christmas and the hottest part of the year, so its time to get SERIOUS about our SUN PROTECTION!!!

Some people are unaware that there are actually 2 different types of UV rays that we must protect our skins against. UVA, UVB, AND there is also INFRARED RADIATION, or sun HEAT.

UVB radiation is the one we are most familiar with. These rays are also known as the Burning Rays, or 'Sunburn', because they pe*****te and damage the outermost layers of the skin or epidermis destroying the skins' Vitamin A, thus accelerating the ageing process. These rays are normally the strongest during the summer months between 10am and 4pm. However these rays do not pe*****te glass.

UVA rays are the sneaky ones. These rays CAN pe*****te glass. They pe*****te right down to the dermis destroying the skins collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, sagging skin, and a yellow, sallow complexion. But even more importantly they can cause indirect damage to the DNA resulting in skin cancer. These rays do not cause sunburn and so cannot be felt, they do however remain constant all year long, rain, hail or shine, as I said they are the 'sneaky ones!'

Which makes protection imperative both indoors and out.

In the photograph above, we see a 69 year old truck driver with a 25 year history of gradual thickening and wrinkling of the skin on the left side of his face due to sun damage sustained through his truck window. You can really see the affect the sun has on accelerating skin ageing!

According to the Cancer Council Australia ‘Skin Cancer accounts for around 80% of newly diagnosed cancers! And… 95 to 99% of skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun!’

So here's some essential information you need to know when choosing the correct product for you. The SPF NUMBER on a sunscreen label represents the level of UVB PROTECTION. CHEMICAL sunscreen ingredients ABSORB UV rays before they have the chance to damage the skin cells. PHYSICAL sunscreen ingredients REFLECT & PARTIALLY ABSORB UV rays and help protect against free radical damage.
BROAD SPECTRUM protects you from BOTH UVA & UVB rays.

However that is not the whole story. How do we combat the effects of Sun HEAT which is yet another form of radiation - INFRARED RADIATION………..????
