🚆 The Great Belt — Storebælt
Leaving Odense, your train heads across the Great Belt (Storebælt) towards Zealand and Copenhagen.
The amazing part is that the railway doesn’t simply cross the water on a bridge. The crossing uses a combination of bridges and a huge underwater railway tunnel.
The railway travels across the western section on a bridge, reaches the tiny island of Sprogø, and then — quite dramatically — disappears underground and beneath the seabed.
The East Tunnel is 8,024 metres long. At its deepest point, the tunnel is around 75 metres below sea level, with the seabed sitting 12–40 metres above the top of the tunnel. It’s actually two separate tunnel tubes, one for each direction, connected by 31 emergency cross-passages.
So when you’re sitting on the train and suddenly go from:
🌊 Open water → 🌉 bridge → 🏝️ Sprogø → 🚆 disappear underground → 🌊 beneath the sea → 🚆 emerge on the other side
…it really is an incredible piece of engineering!
And the whole Storebælt fixed link is 18 km long, connecting Funen with Zealand.

When you leave Copenhagen towards Sweden, you’ll cross the Øresund connection towards Malmö.
