DERMAL / DEEPER PIGMENT

Sometimes what you're seeing isn't sitting predominantly at the surface.

Pigment within the dermis can appear more grey, blue-grey or diffuse and treatments designed for superficial pigmentation may not deliver the same result.

Our approach: This is where assessment becomes particularly important. We may focus on long-term pigment management, skin health, carefully selected actives and appropriate professional treatments, rather than simply trying to aggressively remove what we see.

And sometimes we refer rather than treat.

POST-INFLAMMATORY ERYTHEMA | PIE

That red or pink mark left behind after a breakout?

It may not be pigmentation at all.

Post-inflammatory erythema (PIE) is the persistent red, pink or sometimes purplish discolouration that can remain after acne or inflammation has settled. Unlike post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which involves excess melanin, PIE is predominantly vascular.

And that distinction matters because we don't treat vascular redness the same way we treat pigment.

At Beautyologist, we look beyond the colour and assess what is actually happening within the skin.

Our approach:
We begin by calming inflammation and supporting the skin barrier, while addressing any ongoing breakouts that continue to create redness.

Depending on the skin, we may incorporate LED light therapy, soothing and barrier-supportive treatments and carefully selected homecare. Once the skin is stable, IPL may be considered for appropriate vascular redness, following a thorough consultation and patch test.

We also look holistically at what may be keeping the skin reactive skincare, over-exfoliation, picking, UV exposure, heat and other individual triggers.

Because treating a red mark as though it were brown pigmentation can mean you're targeting the wrong thing.

First identify. Then treat.

MELASMA | HORMONAL PIGMENTATION

Melasma is different. It commonly presents as larger, often symmetrical patches across the cheeks, forehead or upper lip and can involve both epidermal and deeper pigment.

This is where more aggressive doesn't necessarily mean better.

Our approach: We focus on controlling triggers, daily high-level sun protection, pigment-regulating homecare and carefully selected treatments. Depending on the individual skin, this may include controlled professional resurfacing or skin needling but heat and light-based treatments require particular caution because melasma can relapse or worsen following inappropriate treatment.

☀️ SUN SPOTS | SOLAR LENTIGINES

These defined brown spots are associated with accumulated UV exposure and are commonly seen across the face, hands and décolletage.

Our approach: Once the lesion has been appropriately assessed, superficial sun-related pigmentation may respond beautifully to IPL, supported by professional brightening treatments, targeted homecare and meticulous SPF.

And importantly, if a pigmented lesion looks unusual, changing or isn't appropriate for cosmetic treatment, we refer for medical assessment first.

That brown mark left behind after a breakout isn't necessarily a scar.

Inflammation can stimulate excess melanin production, leaving pigmentation long after the original blemish has disappeared.

Our approach: First, we work on the inflammation and the reason it's occurring. Then we can address the residual pigment with carefully selected brightening actives, professional exfoliation and, where appropriate, skin needling or other modalities.

Treating PIH too aggressively can create further inflammation and potentially more pigmentation.

A series of epidermal peels, skin needling will make a big difference combined with LED light therapy.

Melasma — often symmetrical, patchy pigmentation across the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. Hormones, UV and visible light can contribute, and heat can be relevant for some people.

Solar lentigines (sun spots) — defined brown spots associated with cumulative UV exposure, commonly on the face, décolletage and hands.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — pigment that remains after inflammation or injury, commonly following acne, picking, irritation or some treatments.

Freckles (ephelides) — small genetically influenced spots that tend to become more noticeable with UV exposure.

Dermal pigmentation — pigment located deeper within the skin, which can appear more grey, blue-grey or diffuse and may require a different approach from superficial epidermal pigment.

Post-inflammatory erythema (PIE) — worth distinguishing because the pink/red marks left after acne are vascular rather than true melanin pigmentation, so treating them as “pigment” can lead you down the wrong pathway.

MORE THAN A FACE OIL ✨

There’s something beautifully simple about finishing your skincare ritual with oil, but MYSTIQ is anything but basic.

One of our Beautyologist bestsellers, this sophisticated Lira Clinical facial oil combines nourishing botanicals with copper peptides to support skin that feels replenished, conditioned and beautifully luminous.

Why do we love incorporating a facial oil?

It helps seal in moisture, supports the skin barrier and replenishes essential lipids — particularly when skin feels dry, depleted or lacking that healthy glow.

And then there are copper peptides.

These intelligent skin-supporting peptides are valued in advanced skincare for their role in supporting the skin’s natural renewal processes and maintaining the appearance of healthy, resilient skin.

The result?

Nourished. Supple. Luminous. Comforted.

Use a few drops as the final step over your moisturiser at night, or whenever your skin is asking for a little more nourishment.

Sometimes sophisticated skincare isn't about adding more.

It’s about giving your skin exactly what it needs.

A Beautyologist bestseller. ✨
