Why vivid colours change as they fade.

Vivid hair colours work differently to regular colour. They are direct dyes, which means they are not mixed with developer. They sit on top of the hair cuticle rather than opening it up and depositing colour inside.
This makes vivids the healthiest way to colour your hair. They act like a stain that sits on the surface.
But here is the thing: different colour molecules are different sizes. Red molecules are smaller than blue molecules. Smaller molecules wash out faster.
So if you have purple hair, the red will fade first. Your purple will gradually shift towards blue. If you have a warm copper, it will cool down over time. The colour changes as it fades.
Heat speeds this up. Hot showers, hairdryers, straighteners. In winter, when air-drying takes forever and heat tools come out more often, vivids fade faster.
Most vivid colour sits on pre-lightened hair, which is already more fragile. It needs extra care, especially in colder months.
To keep your colour true to the shade you wanted, top-up appointments help. So do take-home colour pots or pigmented shampoos between visits.
Vivid colour is a commitment to maintenance. But when it is looked after, it is worth it.
