🏠 | Urquhart, Scotland

After living for ten years in a house that was built off plans, Tony and Nicola Fraser decided they wanted to create a property that they designed and reflected the way they lived. Set in the countryside of Urquhart, Morayshire, the couple purchased the plot next door and began designing a contemporary take on a traditional Scottish longhouse, one that would combine modern practicality with warmth, character and a strong connection to the outdoors.

Having worked in the construction industry for many years through their business Russell Construction Moray http://Ltd., the couple had gathered inspiration from countless renovations and self-build projects over time. While they collected ideas from magazines, interiors and television programmes such as Grand Designs, Tony already had a strong vision for the home in mind, sketching out the initial concept before handing it to the architect.

“We wanted a home that felt calm and comfortable, but also practical for how we actually live,” says Tony. “We had spent years in a house that had been designed by somebody else, so this time we wanted every detail to feel personal to us.”

The resulting property combines clean architectural lines with natural textures and materials. Black Cedral facades contrast against sandstone walls, while inside, vaulted ceilings, large expanses of glazing and an internal stone gable create a warm yet contemporary atmosphere.

The couple chose Cedral after previously using the product on client projects and renovations through their construction business.

“We loved the look and feel of it straight away,” says Tony. “The black finish worked perfectly with the sandstone, and we also liked that it was low maintenance and built to last.”

Sited in the shadow of Scrabo Tower, Newtownards. This house enjoys stunning views over arable farmland towards Strangford Lough and the Ards Peninsula beyond. Cedral cladding helps create award-winning traveller housing scheme

A pioneering housing development in Galway is demonstrating how thoughtful design, community engagement and carefully selected materials can come together to create inclusive, high-quality homes.

Bóithrín na Saoirse, commissioned by Galway City Council and CENA, the Traveller-led Approved Housing Body, has transformed a long-standing halting site into five permanent, modern and energy-efficient family homes designed specifically for Traveller families. The project, designed by deSiún Architects and constructed by Pat Loftus Construction Group, was developed through extensive collaboration with the future residents, ensuring that cultural values and community needs were reflected throughout the scheme.

A key element of the development’s contemporary appearance is the use of Cedral Click cladding in a smooth finish and Slate Grey colour. Installed diagonally, the cladding creates a striking visual contrast against the white rendered elevations, helping to define the distinctive architectural character of the homes while providing a durable, low-maintenance façade solution.

The use of Cedral Click contributes to the development’s clean, modern aesthetic while offering long-term performance benefits. Its fibre cement construction provides excellent resistance to weathering and requires minimal maintenance, helping to ensure the homes retain their appearance for decades while reducing lifecycle costs for the housing provider.

The homes are arranged in a semi-circular layout around a shared green space, drawing inspiration from traditional Traveller settlement patterns and encouraging a strong sense of community.

Alongside its architectural and social ambitions, the project has been designed to deliver high standards of sustainability, accessibility and long-term liveability through the incorporation of universal design principles.

The quality of the scheme has already been recognised by the industry, with Bóithrín na Saoirse winning Housing Project of the Year at the Building and Architect of the Year Awards 2026, highlighting its success as a model for future Traveller-specific housing developments across Ireland
