Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana began as an existing structure, which we reimagined into a 100-bed multi-speciality hospital, conceived as a feeder to the city’s larger 300-bed super-speciality facility.

Through an adaptive reuse strategy, the project was delivered in just seven months, with patient rooms positioned along the perimeter for daylight and views, and circulation designed to be simple and legible for all users.

Here’s a look at how our vision for the hospital came to life.

In a hospital, proximity is a design decision.

The relationship between departments affects how patients, staff and services move through the building. Planning these connections carefully can improve care flow, reduce unnecessary movement and support day-to-day operations.

At CDA, understanding these relationships is a key part of translating complex healthcare operations into clear spatial strategies.

A flagship super-speciality hospital in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, Yashoda Medicity responds to one of the NCR’s most densely populated urban contexts.

We designed the hospital through a strategy of vertical compression, accommodating a large healthcare programme within a compact footprint and rethinking how hospitals can serve dense urban centres.

What makes a hospital feel human? Often, it’s the spaces between care, where people wait, move, pause and find their way. These moments can make complex healthcare environments feel clearer, calmer and more intuitive.

Across our projects, we use daylight, landscape, visual connections and easy circulation to shape these in-between spaces. Swipe through to explore how the spaces between care can shape the healthcare experience.

How do you design for a climate like Trichy’s while keeping patient experience at the centre?

At DSG Hospital, climate-responsive strategies are integrated into the everyday experience of care. An open-to-sky atrium forms the spatial core, bringing daylight, greenery and openness into movement and waiting areas. Recessed patient rooms create shaded terraces, while strategically punctured façades and canted glazing minimise heat gain and glare.

Together with layered balconies, soft curves and an earthy material palette, these interventions create a hospital that is climate-responsive, naturally lit and deliberately non-institutional.

What makes a hospital design efficient?

Efficiency in healthcare architecture emerges when clinical, spatial, and human systems work in concert. The most effective hospitals are planned to support clinical operations while remaining intuitive, safe, and responsive to the people who move through them.

At CDA, this integrated approach shapes how we plan every healthcare environment.

Director Mohanbir Singh was recently on the jury for THE WADE ASIA’s SHEDESIGNS National Competition, a national platform dedicated to spotlighting women architects and designers, reviewing work from emerging talent nationwide.

Seeing the depth and range of ideas coming from women in design school right now is a strong indicator of where the industry’s next generation of leadership will come from.

Congratulations to all the participants, and thank you to THE WADE ASIA for the invitation.

A hospital doesn’t always have the luxury of spreading out.

Set within one of NCR’s most densely populated precincts, Yashoda Medicity brings 1,800 beds into a compact footprint using vertical planning, integrated care precincts and carefully choreographed movement to make every part of the hospital work harder.

To know how we designed a tertiary-care hospital within a compact footprint, read the feature in Society Interiors & Design — link in bio.
