After more than a decade in international classrooms, I've learned that some of the most valuable lessons about IB teaching never appear in the official documents.

**7 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Earlier as an IB PYP Teacher**

1. Inquiry is not educational free-range parenting.
Children do not magically discover everything on their own.
Good inquiry is carefully designed, intentionally guided, and supported by teachers who know when to step in and when to step back.

2. You do not need to know everything.
In fact, one of the best things you can say is: "That's a great question. Let's find out together."
The pressure to be the smartest person in the room disappears when you become a learner too.

3. Relationships will always matter more than the perfect lesson plan.
A child who feels safe, seen, and valued will learn more than a child sitting through the world's most beautifully color-coded unit planner.

4. Reflection is where growth hides.
Some of my biggest teaching breakthroughs came after lessons that went completely sideways.
Sometimes the lesson succeeds. Sometimes the reflection does.

5. Documentation saves your sanity.
Take photos.
Keep student quotes.
Collect evidence of learning.
Future-you will thank present-you when report-writing season arrives.

6. Student agency does not mean students make every decision.
Children need voice and choice.
They also need boundaries, structure, routines, and adults who occasionally say: "That's a creative idea, but no, we cannot turn the classroom into a shark research center during our geometry lesson."

7. The goal is not perfection.
The goal is growth.
The best IB teachers I know are not the ones with flawless classrooms.
They are the ones who stay curious, reflective, and willing to keep learning.

To every new IB teacher reading this: The language may feel unfamiliar. The planning may feel overwhelming.

And at some point you will probably spend twenty minutes debating a central idea with colleagues and leave with three new questions. That's normal.

Keep asking questions.
Keep reflecting. Keep learning.
You're probably doing better than you think.

A few years ago, I realized something strange. I could manage a classroom full of children.
I could de-escalate conflict, support emotional needs, teach lessons, answer questions, solve problems, and adapt to constant interruptions.
Then I would come home and feel completely defeated by dinner, bath time, and a request for "just one more snack."
For a long time, I thought something was wrong with me.
But eventually, I understood the truth: The problem was not my ability, but my capacity.
Many working mothers spend their entire day giving.
Giving attention, patience, emotional energy, solutions and care. By the time they walk through their own front door, there is very little left in reserve.
Yet this is often the moment they expect themselves to become the perfect parent, partner, homemaker, and human being.
No wonder so many women feel exhausted. We are not failing because we are doing too little.
We are often carrying far more than anyone can see.
That realization inspired me to write Raising Humans, Teaching Minds.
Not as another productivity guide. Not as another list of things to do.
But as a reminder that sustainable care begins with honesty, self-compassion, and realistic expectations.
Sometimes the most important question is not: "How can I do more?"
It is:"What matters most today?"
