Least you were not aware, today is 🧸 WORLD INFANT, CHILD & ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH DAY – 23 APRIL 🧸

The way we are as adults – our fears, our triggers, our patterns in relationships, even how we handle stress – often starts in childhood.

Why early years matter:

A baby's brain grows faster in the first 3 years than at any other time. Every interaction – a hug, a yell, silence, consistency, chaos – literally shapes brain architecture.

How early experiences affect adult mental health:

🧠 Attachment & relationships
If a child feels safe, seen, and soothed, they learn trust. If not, they may grow up fearing abandonment, avoiding closeness, or becoming people‑pleasers.

🧠 Emotional regulation
If a child is taught to name feelings ("I see you're angry"), they learn to manage emotions. If they're shamed for crying or yelling, they may suppress feelings – leading to anxiety, outbursts, or numbness as adults.

🧠 Self‑worth & shame
Repeated criticism, neglect, or being told they're "too much" or "not enough" becomes an inner voice. Adults who grew up this way often struggle with imposter syndrome, perfectionism, or feeling fundamentally flawed.

🧠 Fear & hypervigilance
If a child experiences trauma (abuse, violence, loss, or constant unpredictability), their nervous system stays on high alert. As adults, they may be easily startled, always waiting for something bad to happen, or struggle with panic attacks.

🧠 Coping patterns
A child who learns that numbing out (dissociating) or acting out gets attention may carry those coping mechanisms into adulthood – substance use, self‑harm, eating disorders, or explosive anger.

But here's the hopeful part:

✨ Healing is possible. Understanding where your fears and patterns come from is the first step.
✨ You can rewire. Therapy, safe relationships, and self‑compassion can change how your brain responds to stress.
✨ You are not broken. You adapted to survive. Now you can learn to thrive.

What you can do today:

• If you're a parent or future parent: learn about emotional attunement, consistent routines, and validating feelings.
• If you had a hard childhood: be gentle with yourself. Your reactions make sense given what you survived.
• If you know a struggling child or teen: listen without fixing. Your presence matters.

Resources in Eswatini:

📞 UNESWA Student Counselling – for students processing childhood experiences
📞 Childline Eswatini – toll‑free 116 for children and teens in distress
📞 SWAGAA – 951 (toll‑free) for child abuse and neglect reporting

Your past does not have to be your future. Early years matter – but so does today.
