Things I would do if I were starting over as a brand-new nail tech 💅🏽
1️⃣ Do your research.
Before spending time and money, I would spend hours on YouTube and social media learning about the nail industry. Understand what you’re committing to, what opportunities exist, and what it really takes to build a successful career.
2️⃣ Go to school and get your credentials.
After doing my research, I would attend beauty school and make sure all of my credentials are in order. No matter where you go to school, professionalism matters. While in school, I would also document my journey on social media. People love seeing growth from the beginning, and it helps you build a relatable brand. I would also work part-time in a salon to gain experience and get comfortable in the industry.
3️⃣ Work in a busy salon after graduation.
Once I graduated and had my cosmetology license in hand, I would intentionally find a busy salon with high traffic. Even if it’s a 60/40 or 50/50 commission split, the experience and opportunity to build a clientele can be worth it if you’re in the right environment.
4️⃣ Find a mentor.
Mentorship is one of the best investments you can make in your career. It’s something I wish I had pursued much earlier. A good mentor can help you avoid unnecessary mistakes, save time, and provide guidance based on their own experience. Your mentor doesn’t have to be a nail tech specifically—someone thriving in the beauty industry can still offer valuable wisdom and tools you can apply to your business.
The reason I’m sharing these tips is because I genuinely want to help build up other nail techs. Some of these are things I wish I had done sooner, and some are things I’ve done that helped me succeed. We all face obstacles along the way, but it’s truly greater later.
I hope this helps someone. In Jesus’ name, bye. 🤍
💖 Your forever imprint starts here.
There was a season where I had to figure everything out on my own.
The mistakes.
The trial and error.
The late nights.
The moments that made me question if I was even good enough.
But every lesson became part of something bigger.
That’s why I haven’t just been creating another nail guide…
I’ve been building a roadmap that I wish I had when I started.
